Mine Design Development
POINT380 provided a global mining company and an NGO project partner with facility audits, background data collection, workshop development, technical facilitation and technical expertise to create breakthrough improvements in capital and energy efficiency for new and expanding iron ore mines in Africa and Australia, and for an ambitious new U.S. underground copper mine.
Recycling Facility Design Development
In support of a successful venture financing effort POINT380 provided preliminary design for a $100M recycling facility for a startup waste-to-energy group. POINT380 conducted technology research and collected vendor data to construct a model of physical flows of material, energy and water over a ten-year ramp up in production of a large central and multiple satellite processing facilities. This model is used to drive detailed capital and operating cost estimates which form the fundamental cost schedules underlying the company’s financial projections. The architecture of POINT380’s Preliminary Facility Design Model (PFDM) provides optimal capital balancing in a flexible and highly modifiable format. Ultimately several hundred versions of the plant model were developed to support changes and options required by the business plan and financing partners, which included leading Wall Street banks and strategic partners in recycling and steel industries.
Greenfield Oil Refinery Design Development
POINT380 provided a North American oil refiner and an NGO with workshop development, technical facilitation, economic analysis and technical support to create breakthrough improvements in capital and energy efficiency for a planned new refinery. POINT380’s analysis and innovations caused the design team of a world-class engineering firm to reexamine assumptions about refinery processes and to explore new concepts in plant utility system design.
US Industrial Sector Energy Technology Strategy and Opportunity Assessment
POINT380 led the effort to develop quantitative energy and carbon analysis of the United States industrial sector for Rocky Mountain Institute’s Reinventing Fire publication and initiative. Using proprietary research and modeling, POINT380 forecasted the energy consumption (electrical and thermal), greenhouse gas emissions, and energy reduction opportunities for all major segments of the industrial sector. The analysis estimated potential for emissions savings through 2050 and identified highest priority industry segments, technology and techniques. These analyses were developed into the book and website content for Reinventing Fire.
Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Design Development
POINT380 provided Rocky Mountain Institute and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with workshop development, technical facilitation and technical expertise to create breakthrough improvements in capital and energy efficiency for NREL’s in-house cellulosic ethanol plant design.
Water Treatment Plant Operational Emissions and Analysis
POINT380 supported a U.S.-based water and wastewater treatment plant engineering and construction company to analyze current energy use and GHG emissions of an operating 20 million gallon per day facility in Santa Barbara, CA. POINT380’s analysis estimated expected emissions after a proposed upgrade to the plant’s treatment system. The analysis utilized WRI/WBCSD, IPCC and EPA emissions calculation methodologies, and included a detailed examination of the impact of an ozone treatment process on energy use and GHG emissions.
